Painting A Day :: Week Two

Another week, another week of paintings! I am not totally in love with all of them, but there are some I am really digging. I think there are a couple I’m going to have to explore in more detail later, even. What do you think so far? Got a favourite? It’s also really hard to photograph wet oil paintings, if you couldn’t tell! Once I apply the resin the details will be much easier to see.

I’m taking this goal one day at a time, but when I think of it in my mind I think of it in weeks instead of months or days. Months are just so long, they’re intimidating. And days, well there is just so many of them! Weeks seems less scary, and more attainable. Just 24 more? Psh, I can do that no problem.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a suggestion for a painting idea, comment here or on the Facebook page and tell me all about it. I’ve got a lot of days ahead of me, maybe I’ll pick your idea!

Just Do It :: My Painting A Day Challenge

Ever taken on a goal that both scared and excited you all at once? That’s what I’ve done. I decided this year is the year to ‘just do it’. Planning can only get you so far, and reaching for absolute perfection will leave you empty handed. So this year, I’m going for it. Whole heartedly, full on, just doing what needs to be done. The worst that can happen is failure, and at least you can learn from it. Doing nothing gains you nothing. It’s time for me to take my life by the horns, and face down my fear of failure. This year, I am going to take those goals and show them who’s boss. I’m going to take control, and just do it.

Like many people, I don’t put much stock in New Years resolutions. I have no personal connection to the date or the practice, so I really have no motivation to follow through on them, and stopped making them. There is however a ‘new year’ that means a lot to me, and that is my birthday. If you think about it, a birthday is really your personal New Year. So for my Personal New Year, I made myself a goal, and a promise. The promise, well we’ll cover that later, but the goal is what I wanted to tell you about today.

My goal this year is to paint at least One Painting A Day for the next year. By my birthday next year, I should have at least 365 new paintings under my belt. They don’t have to be on canvas, I can paint jewelry too, I’m obviously allowed to paint more than one painting, and I can use any type of paint. But, I have to paint every day, I can’t just make it up the next day.

Intrigued? Excited? I know I am.

I started last week, and this is what I’ve done so far. Check back next week to see the next round.

Customer Spotlight :: Steampunk Gear Pendant

Today’s customer spotlight features a steampunk gear oil painting pendant.

When the customer approached me she wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted, but one of her ideas was a sort of ’steampunk-inspired’ gear or cog like the insides of a pocket watch. I have done a large scale watch-gear themed painting before (three by four feet to be exact) so it was definitely an interesting challenge to translate it to a much, much smaller scale.

Customer Spotlight :: Abstract Landscape Pendants

Today’s customer spotlight features a pair of abstract landscape oil painting pendants.

When I was approached for this commission, the details were pretty vague: “Green and tan-brown wavy lines, like the lines a rake makes in a zen garden.”

Oh, like an abstract landscape? We discussed it and she agreed that was exactly what she was looking for. My first attempt (pictured above) was too literal and too grey-green for my tastes but I finished it anyways because I liked it. The second one (pictured below) was just right and exactly what she was looking for.

It all turned out for the best, because the first pendant I had painted reminded her of one time she visited Banff when it was raining. She took both then, happily.
